5-HTP
Amino AcidsKey Benefits
How It Works
5-Hydroxytryptophan is the immediate precursor to serotonin, bypassing the rate-limiting tryptophan hydroxylase step. It crosses the blood-brain barrier efficiently and converts to serotonin via aromatic amino acid decarboxylase. Serotonin then converts to melatonin for sleep.
Dosage & Timing
Recommended Dosage
50-300 mg daily
Best Time to Take
Evening for sleep, or divided doses for mood. Take with vitamin B6 for conversion.
Recommended Form
5-HTP from Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract
Side Effects
Nausea (most common), GI discomfort. Risk of serotonin syndrome with SSRIs (DANGEROUS - do not combine without medical supervision).
Drug Interactions
CRITICAL: Do NOT combine with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or triptans. Risk of serotonin syndrome. Discuss with doctor if on any serotonergic medication.
What Does The Research Say?
Studies show efficacy for depression comparable to some SSRIs, appetite suppression for weight loss, and improved sleep. Must be taken with EGCG or carbidopa to prevent peripheral serotonin conversion. Short-term use recommended.
