GABA

Amino Acids

Key Benefits

Primary inhibitory neurotransmitter
Relaxation and anxiety reduction
Sleep onset support
Growth hormone secretion

How It Works

Gamma-aminobutyric acid is the brain's main inhibitory neurotransmitter. Supplemental GABA's ability to cross the blood-brain barrier is debated, but it may act via the enteric nervous system (gut-brain axis) and peripheral GABA receptors. Also shown to increase growth hormone transiently.

Dosage & Timing

Recommended Dosage

250-750 mg daily

Best Time to Take

Evening before bed, or as needed for anxiety

Recommended Form

PharmaGABA (natural fermented form)

Side Effects

Generally safe. Drowsiness, tingling, shortness of breath at high doses rarely. May feel unusual at first.

Drug Interactions

May enhance effects of sedatives, benzodiazepines, and anti-anxiety medications. Start low.

What Does The Research Say?

Blood-brain barrier penetration is controversial, yet human studies show measurable relaxation effects (possibly gut-mediated). PharmaGABA (natural form) shows better results than synthetic GABA in studies.
