Probiotics

Gut Health

Key Benefits

Gut microbiome diversity and balance
Immune system modulation (70% in gut)
Digestive comfort and regularity
Mental health via gut-brain axis

How It Works

Probiotic bacteria colonise the GI tract, competing with pathogens for resources and receptor sites. They produce short-chain fatty acids (butyrate, propionate), strengthen tight junctions, modulate immune responses via dendritic cells, and communicate with the brain via the vagus nerve.

Dosage & Timing

Recommended Dosage

10-50 billion CFU daily (strain-specific dosing varies)

Best Time to Take

Morning on empty stomach or with light meal

Recommended Form

Condition-specific strains, or broad-spectrum multi-strain

Side Effects

Temporary bloating, gas during initial adjustment. Rare systemic infection risk in severely immunocompromised.

Drug Interactions

May interact with immunosuppressants. Antibiotics kill probiotics (space 2+ hours apart). Some strains produce histamine.

What Does The Research Say?

Strain-specific evidence: Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG for diarrhoea, Saccharomyces boulardii for antibiotic-associated issues, psychobiotics for mood. Multi-strain is not always better than targeted single-strain for specific conditions.
